Salvation Army (Pelisson) • Lyon • c1893

Evidence suggests this instrument was imported by Salvationist Publishing, and not actually made by them. They did make their own design, although I haven’t seen any yet. Pelisson of Lyon, France (successor to Couturior) would appear to be the maker based on the advertisement shown below. The Salvation Army catalog page dates to 1893.

This cornet is interestin in that it has an attachment for playing in the key of C.  This bypasses the usual mouthpipe, and replaces the main tuning slide.

It arrived in its original coffin case, which happens to have exactly the same unusual hinges and latches as a Gautrot pocket cornet case that I have, further reinforcing my belief that the cornet was French-made. I know of one additional example, identical to this, with no identifying marks on the bell, but an area (surrounded by floral engraving) intended to be filled in with the eventual dealer’s name.

Length (shank removed): 8.0”

Bell Diameter: 3.75”

Bore: .460
