Angela DeCarlis’ “Budangie”
 cornet & trumpet mute

Budangie” Mute

During the week of June 4th - 8th, 2006, my daughter Angela (13 at the time) attended a gathering of my cornet collector/player friends. After seeing a large display of vintage mutes, she had a brainstorm...

I had purchased a beer at a water theme park packaged in a nifty spun aluminum bottle.  I thought it was so cool, I couldn’t “beer” to throw the bottle out and brought it home, wondering what I could do with it. Angela provided the answer to that question. On the morning of the last day of our gathering, I simply added three replacement mute corks with double sided tape, and tried it out.  It worked great, even down to the lower range where many mutes play badly. We brought it to that day’s activities where it was tried out by nearly every other player there.

These are sold as 4-packs for nearly as much as a 6-pack.  But they’re essentially free, so they literally beg us to experiment.  I intend to drill holes, cut them off, and try a few other things. These are 16 oz. bottles.  I’m told other companies are using 12 oz. bottles, which should make great mutes as well.
